Providence Health International Sponsored Trips
PHI has developed long term partnerships with not-for-profits in Guatemala to focus our efforts on a more sustained and impactful approach to global health. Providence and Swedish employees are invited to apply for the following volunteer projects and will be accepted on a skills-needed, first come, and first served basis. Volunteers are expected to participate in pre-trip orientation meetings, reflections and following the trip, debrief gatherings. Additionally, volunteers are asked to pay part of their travel costs, raise additional trip funds and use their PTO to participate. PHI provides service opportunities to employees and health care providers through two programs:
Faith in Practice (FIP)
FIP is a Christian non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Texas that coordinates volunteer teams to provide medical and surgical care to local patients who would otherwise not receive it. Providence works with FIP to send clinical volunteer teams to communities in western Guatemala.
Medical Teams International (MTI)
MTI is a Christian NGO based in Portland that coordinates public health projects in some of the most impoverished areas of Guatemala. Providence works with MTI to send volunteer teams (primarily non-clinical) to support community health improvement initiatives, such as installing efficient cook stoves, clean water systems and sanitary latrines.
Service Learning Grants (SLG)
SLG’s are also available to employees and funding is limited. Applicants must express how they will develop greater understanding to serve people of diverse cultural and economic backgrounds, become better stewards of material resources, gain new perspectives on health care delivery and service to those who are poor, and experience a renewed commitment to the Mission and values of Providence Health & Services.
