Rehabilitation
As a leading rehabilitation facility in the South Bay, Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center San Pedro offers general rehabilitation for neurological and orthopedic conditions in addition to specialty services in neurological retraining, lymphedema, hand therapy, vision therapy, and limited pediatric evaluation and treatment.
Rehabcentre offers a 20 bed inpatient rehabilitation unit for patients with qualifying diagnosis. Under the direction of a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician, the rehab team of nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, psychologists, case managers/discharge planners, dieticians and support staff provide at least 3 hours of therapy in addition to daily medication management, disease specific education, family and caregiver training, dietary consultation and therapeutic activities. Qualifying diagnosis include stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, neurological diseases (like parkinsons, multiple sclerosis or neuropathy), medical complex surgical patients, amputation, hip fracture, and debility. A Pre-Admission assessment is required to determine if a patient requires the skills and intensity of this service. Most patients are transferred from an acute hospital, long term care acute hospital, or skilled nursing facility.
General outpatient rehabilitation includes services to address general debility (functional loss due to prolonged hospitalization, diabetes, COPD, or other chronic disease), trauma, orthopedic conditions like arthritis, back pain, joint injuries such as rotator cuff, tendonitis, hip/knee/ankle injuries, or post-surgical care. Each patient is thoroughly evaluated to identify the individualized care plan that is needed to meet each patient’s goals.
- Neurological retraining includes services to address functional loss following stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury, neuropathy, guillian barre syndrome, parkinsons, multiple sclerosis or other conditions affecting the brain or spinal cord. Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy coordinate care to address deficits in movement, function, cognition, communication and swallow. The team uses hands-on skills and advanced technology to maximize the brain-body connection for optimal function.
- Lymphedema therapy includes evaluation and treatment by specialty trained physical and/or occupational therapists.
- Hand therapy includes evaluation and treatment by specialty trained occupational therapists under the supervision of a certified hand therapist.
- Vision therapy includes evaluation and treatment of vision loss related to a recent neurologic event like stroke or brain injury. Referral to a neuro-optometrist may be recommended.
- Speech therapy includes evaluation and treatment of patient with vocal paralysis, communication or cognitive loss after a recent neurologic event like stroke or brain injury, parkinsons, or other diseases. Swallow evaluation and re-training of dysphagia is also offered.
Rehabcentre is accredited by CARF for Adult Inpatient Rehabilitation Programs and for their Adult Stroke Specialty Program. It was ranked by the Uniform Data System for Medical Rehabilitation (UDSMR) as being in the top 5% of acute rehab centers in the nation for the quality and effectiveness of its program in 2009. This rating is based on a comprehensive scoring of multiple items, most of which pertain to the ability of acute rehab patients to perform daily living activities after their treatment. It shows once again that Rehabcentre is the treatment center of choice for patients recovering from a serious illness like stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury or other complex medical condition.
Specialty trained staff and state of the art technology are combined in each service to provide the patient the best opportunity for improvement and independence. All services require physician prescription. For more information about services at Rehabcentre call 310-514-5370.
