Curriculum Highlights

We have an innovative curriculum, especially in our third year.

Rotations include a rural medicine month each year. Several commutable sites are established or the resident may identify a new rural site for training. The second and third year rural rotations are "away" rotations during which the resident is excused from continuity clinic and call responsibilities.

We have a night float system in the first and second years. We provide longitudinalized training during the second and third years in areas such as behavioral medicine, practice management, emergency medicine, geriatrics and urology.

We also emphasize obstetrical care and training. Our OB curriculum provides extensive training in high- and low-risk obstetrical care supported by a full-time OB-GYN faculty member.

Longitudinal R-3 Curriculum
The third year curriculum is completely longitudinal and includes:
• 32 weeks in the continuity practice, with 8-9 half days of clinic per week.
• Shared practice with R-3 team member.
• Eight weeks of full-time electives outside of the practice.
• Eight in-patient clinical chief weeks

Procedural Training
We offer a number of subspecialty procedural clinics, many of which have one resident and one attending physician scheduled per clinic. Some of our specialty clinics include:
• Dermatology
• Colposcopy
• Gynecology
• HIV and infectious diseases
• Travel medicine
• Occupational medicine
• D.O. manipulation clinic
• OB ultrasound
• Psychiatric consultations
• Pediatric consultations

Other innovative curricular components include group visits and planned patient visits. The group visits include a multidisciplinary team of providers, including residents, faculty, behavioral scientists and nutritionists. Group visits are very popular with our patients, providing peer support and an emphasis on self-care goals. We currently offer group visits for:
• Adolescent OB Clinic
• Diabetes Care
• Well-Child Clinic
• Asthma Collaborative

The residency was recently awarded a $300,000 15-month grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The grant focus is on advancing diabetes self-management in the primary care setting.
