Magnet Recognition

The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) awarded Magnet designation for excellence in nursing services to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in 2007.

The Magnet Recognition Program®, an impressive and important designation, brings national recognition to our hospital with a nursing staff that is among the best in the nation. Only the top five percent of the 5,000 hospitals in the United States have received Magnet Status; Providence Holy Cross Medical Center is one of the smallest hospitals in California to receive this distinction.

“We may be a community-based hospital, but our nursing staff is among the best in the nation, and I’m honored that the ANCC has recognized this,” said Betty Newsom, Chief Nursing Officer, Providence Holy Cross Medical Center. “With this recognition, our patients can expect to be cared for by the finest nurses and that they will receive the best quality outcomes."

The ANCC’s Magnet Recognition Program provides consumers with the ultimate benchmark to measure the quality of care that they can expect to receive. The Magnet Recognition Program recognizes health care organizations that demonstrate excellence in nursing services and adherence to national standards for the organization and delivery of nursing services.

ANCC’s Magnet designation is achieved after successfully completing a rigorous process where a team of nurses with a range of professional expertise and experience-based knowledge review the nursing services, nursing organization, and nursing care itself. These appraisers not only review traditional “nurse-sensitive” indicators, but also conduct extensive interviews that help evaluate nursing services.

Our Magnet Journey Continues

As we move into our fourth year as a Magnet Organization, the drive for nursing excellence continues to be a major focus at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center despite the national downturn in the economy and California’s growing financial problems.

Larry Bowe, who came in April 2009 to Providence Holy Cross as the new Chief Executive, has been very supportive of the Magnet initiative. His focus has been on patient satisfaction, driven by excellent patient care provided by our nurses and physicians.

Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, historically has a strong culture that provides the ability to adapt to change and move forward with innovative ideas. Shrinking financial resources, regionalization of operations within Providence’s California facilities, and more regulatory requirements have only increased our commitment to patient quality and care.

The achievement of high quality outcomes and other successes continues to bring awards and other accolades to Providence Holy Cross as we continue on this Magnet Journey. Providence Holy Cross will apply for Magnet Re-Designation in 2011.
