Diabetes Care
Providence Holy Cross Medical Center is committed to helping prevent and control diabetes. According to the American Diabetes Association, over 23 million Americans have diabetes while another 57 million have a condition known as pre-diabetes. Diabetes is a serious disease. At its worst, diabetes can result in heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, nerve damage, blindness or amputation.
Providence Holy Cross Medical Center offers a variety of ways people with diabetes can take control of their disease by obtaining accurate, up-to-date information regarding diabetes management. Nationally recognized by the Insulin Congress, our award-winning Diabetes Department works to manage blood sugar levels for our hospitalized patients. Through our comprehensive Diabetes Education Program, recently certified by the American Diabetes Association, patients and their families learn to reduce the risk of diabetes and lead healthy, active lives. This Certificate of Education Recognition recognizes Providence Holy Cross for the high quality program we provide our patients with diabetes.
The recognition status means the hospital’s diabetes education staff provides the latest information about diabetes management to our participants. This level of care is extremely important in the community served by Providence Holy Cross because a relatively high percentage of residents are coping with diabetes. In fact, Providence provides an outreach program for diagnosis and treatment, primarily in Latino neighborhoods where diabetes is especially prevalent.
Through our outreach program, our Latino Health Promoters go into the community and provide glucose/diabetes screenings to local church communities and schools. They also teach community members how to live a healthy lifestyle with diabetes and offer information about local low-cost clinics and physician offices for those who may be uninsured.
