Emergency and Trauma Services

Emergency Care at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center provides fast, effective, professional emergency services twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

Emergency care physicians, nurses and other specially trained team members respond to any minor or major emergency, from a compound fracture to heart failure. Our Emergency Department is set up to handle any type of medical emergency. Specialized treatment rooms are available for cardiac care, trauma, suturing, orthopedic casting, pediatrics, general care, gynecology and obstetrics, and ear, nose and throat exams.

Trauma Center

As part of our emergency care services, Providence Holy Cross has one of the few Level II Trauma Centers serving both the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys. Our Trauma Center provides around-the-clock emergency services to the most severely injured. Our medical team has special training in treating injuries to the head, spine and vital organs. The Center has been part of the Los Angeles Trauma System for more than twenty-five years and has received Verification Status from the American College of Surgeons, acknowledging our commitment to the highest standards for a community-based hospital trauma program.

As an open catchment trauma center, Providence Holy Cross Medical Center meticulously coordinates patient transportation within the LA system, ensuring that patients who have sustained traumatic injuries within our geographical area can get to the trauma center for treatment within the crucial 30-minute time period. As a Level II trauma center, our Center has specialized programs, equipment and staff, including a trauma surgeon, available at all times.

Our trauma team has treated victims of plane crashes, train crashes, car crashes and bike crashes. They've worked miracles on victims of freak accidents, delivered newborns in cases where their mothers were severely injured, and saved gunshot victims for whom the physicians themselves held little hope. Providence Holy Cross Trauma Center participated in treating the injured passengers from the Metrolink collision in Chatsworth that killed 25 and injured more than 100. In 2008, the Providence Holy Cross Trauma Center received Verification Status from the American College of Surgeons, acknowledging our commitment to the highest standards for a community-based hospital trauma program.

Heart Attack: STEMI Receiving Center

The State Department of Health Services and Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Services Agency have designated our emergency department as a STEMI Receiving Center (ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction), or heart attack treatment center. Patients who show symptoms of an acute heart attack (or acute myocardial infarction) when tested by paramedics with an EKG are brought to the nearest STEMI Receiving Center for care. Our Emergency Department has met the rigorous guidelines to receive this designation, including meeting the "90-minute" goal of restoring blood flow. The STEMI Receiving Team in the Emergency Department coordinates closely with local paramedics, rapidly mobilizing our Providence Coronary Catheterization Team, interventional cardiologists, and cardiothoracic surgeons to ensure the best possible outcomes.
