Living Our Mission
In 2009, Providence Health and Services in Northwest Washington provided more than $13 million in free care to our patients in need, as part of our total community benefit of more than $42 million. The only not-for-profit, non-taxing medical center in the county, Providence Regional makes significant contributions to the community it serves. View 2009 Community Benefit Report.
The story behind the numbers
Guided by the philosophy of the Sisters of Providence, we faithfully honor their vision of caring for the poor and vulnerable in the communities we serve. We never turn away any patient who cannot pay. And every day, through contributions of time, expertise and money, we reach out to help those who need us the most. Here are some stories behind the numbers:
Camp PROV
Funded by the Providence General Children's Association, Camp PROV provides a week-long safe and fun day camp experience each summer for children with special care needs and their siblings. Great experiences are shared through swimming pool play (hydrotherapy), arts and crafts, games, physical therapy, special education and other exciting experiences. Parents are able to share in the fun or take advantage of the opportunity for some rest and renewal.
Camp Erin
Providence Hospice and Home Care made Camp Erin a reality. Supported by funding from the Jaimie Moyer Foundation, Camp Erin is the first Bereavement Camp in our area dedicated to children who have lost a loved one.
Parish Nurse Program
A joint collaboration between the Interfaith Association, the Red Cross, Snohomish County Health District, local churches and Providence Regional, this program provides the community with specially trained disaster nurses in the event of an emergency. Providence Regional provided the first three years of funding for this special nurse training program so that these nurses can be activated to set up shelter space, and provide basic nursing support in strategically located church sites during the first crucial days of a disaster.
Providence Everett Healthcare Clinic
Furthering the mission, Providence Regional opened the Providence Everett Healthcare Clinic to provide basic medical care for people in the community who had difficulty gaining access to healthcare providers. The clinic recently expanded to increase primary care and mental health services to more patients. Expansion brings more efficiency to patients, less wait time (The Everett Herald, Feb. 17, 2010)
Revealing God's love for all
The Providence mission—“As people of Providence, we reveal God’s love for all, especially the poor and vulnerable, through our compassionate service”—is alive and well within the walls of Providence Regional Medical Center. It can be seen in everything from the compassionate care patients receive to the design of the new Cymbaluk Medical Tower.
But for employees and physicians, the mission isn’t just lived inside the walls of Providence. Every year, employees and physicians donate thousands of hours of time by volunteering in the local community and around the world.

Frank Andersen, MD, division chief of Women & Children’s Services, cares for a patient during a mission trip to Guatemala.
In addition to sponsoring many local volunteer events (see right sidebar), in 2010 Providence Regional sponsored 20 employees on medical mission trips—trips to provide much-needed care and supplies to people in countries around the globe.
This year, employees and physicians provided care to people in Haiti following the country’s devastation by earthquake, as well as taking mission trips to Ecuador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Uganda and other countries.
