Our seasoned team of more than 60 stroke experts, including neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, rehab specialists, nurses, and therapists provides 24/7 services to over 1,000 primary and secondary stroke patients per year.
We are recognized by the American Stroke Association as a provider of care consistent with national guidelines for the best possible stroke care.
Stroke risk factors and warning signs
Affecting more than half a million Americans each year, stroke is the third leading killer in the United States, behind heart disease and cancer.
Stroke risk factors:
• smoking
• high blood pressure
• diabetes
• history of heart disease
• high cholesterol
• use of oral contraceptives (birth control pills)
Stroke warning signs:
• severe headache
• confusion, disorientation or memory loss
• numbness, weakness or clumsiness of an arm, leg or side of the face
• abnormal or slurred speech
• loss of vision
• poor balance or lack of coordination
Act F-A-S-T when a stroke strikes
• Face - Does the person have a facial droop? Ask them to smile.
• Arms - Is on arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms.
• Speech - Is the speech slurred? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence.
• Time - Time for help. Call 9-1-1!
New Clinical Evaluation Unit puts mini-stroke patients on recovery fast track
Timing is critical when treating a stroke patient. If you arrive at Providence Regional's Emergency Department with symptoms of a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) or mini-stroke, you'll receive an accelerated preliminary work-up and then be taken to our new Clinical Evaluation Unit (CEU), located on the same floor.
