Deborah Burton, RN, PhD 

Vice president, chief nursing officer

Deborah Burton, RN, PhD, serves as vice president and chief nursing officer for Providence Health & Services. She is responsible for working in strategic partnership with local chief nursing officers and chief medical officers to assure the highest quality of care for our patients.

Before joining Providence, Dr. Burton founded one of the nation’s first state-based nursing workforce centers, the Oregon Center for Nursing, to focus on serious nursing workforce challenges. Before that, she was the director of education at the Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center. She is a decorated Army Nurse Corps veteran who is devoted to the profession of nursing, having begun her career as a nursing assistant at 16 years old.

Dr. Burton holds a doctorate and a master’s in nursing from the Oregon Health and Sciences University, and a bachelor’s in nursing from the University of Portland.
