Health Insurance Coverage Information
As part of national health care reform, almost all Americans are required to have health insurance or risk a tax penalty. The goal is to make coverage more available and affordable for those who do not have health insurance, or have limited coverage.
Individuals and families may either qualify for private insurance coverage available through health insurance exchanges or for state-sponsored Medicaid coverage.
Private insurance coverage
Open enrollment for private insurance coverage has closed in some states, but is still open in others. Some exchanges have announced they will reopen for a certain time period. In the exchanges that are closed, enrollment is available for people who experience certain qualifying life events. To get current information about enrollment in your state, contact our customer support line.
If you qualify for Medicaid, you may apply at any time throughout the year. The application process is different in each state.
