Let me introduce you to Claudia, a beautiful 28-year-old woman who spoke to our group at Casa de Fe. As she stood before us, her first words were “Thank you to all of you, and may God bless you.” When Clau...dia started to tell her story, she had tears in her eyes. By the time she finished, we all did.
When Claudia was three, both of her parents and all of her siblings were killed in the Guatemalan civil war. She was taken in and raised by a local family with kids of their own. Then tragedy struck again, when her adoptive parents both died, and she grew apart from her adoptive siblings. Claudia was a young adult, and all alone.
As if she hadn’t already suffered enough, life dealt her another cruel blow. In a freak accident, she was run over by a car, and her leg and shoulder were badly injured. Alone and afraid, she had nowhere to turn, and for eight months endured the physical agony of having the right side of her body crushed and rendered basically useless.
Then, a bright light entered her life. Claudia met some friends who knew about Faith In Practice. She was brought to see doctors at a Faith In Practice village medical team, who determined that her infected leg had to be amputated. She was referred for surgery to Los Obras Sociales Hospital in Antigua. In June, 2012, Claudia lost her leg, but gained a family. As she recovered at Casa de Fe, she grew to know and love the staff there, and they, her. She now considers Faith In Practice her family, so much so that she has asked to volunteer at Casa de Fe.
Every story needs a happy ending, and this one is no different. Claudia was fitted for and received a prosthetic leg the day before Valentine’s Day this year. And now, as she walks through Casa de Fe, she’s able to return the love she received there to the new patients who arrive each day.
