Handicapped Access Equal Opportunity Housing

Overview

Providence House is a high-quality, supportive housing program founded by the Sisters of Providence, and owned and managed by Providence Health and Services. The 34 one-bedroom and 6 two-bedroom apartments were designed and built especially for people with low-incomes living with HIV/AIDS and other disabilities. Apartments are wheelchair accessible and have other accommodations such as grab bars and an emergency pull cord. In addition, all the comforts of home are provided, including full kitchen amenities, private bathrooms with a tub or walk-in shower, built-in storage and an open living space. Shared laundry facilities and welcoming community spaces are available to all residents. Providence House is the largest single provider of housing for persons living with HIV/AIDS in Alameda County.

Located in uptown Oakland, Providence House is close to bus lines, a BART station, shopping, entertainment and medical providers. Well maintained landscaping and a community garden provide respite from the urban surroundings, and a patio offers residents the opportunity enjoy the outdoors with the benefit of a lush, green hedge providing privacy from the street.

Providence places a high value in supporting individual residents and creating a vibrant community by providing a high staff-to-resident ratio, gathering spaces for resident groups, and a wide variety of scheduled activities including educational and recreational programming. A Service Coordinator can help residents identify and access local resources and services, and can advocate for residents who need assistance. In addition, we provide consistent, high-level, on-site supportive services by contracting with licensed practitioners for psychotherapy, massage therapy, acupuncture and herbal remedy therapy in addition to providing 24-hour staffing for tenants with ongoing concerns and emergencies.

Providence House Oakland receives an operating subsidy from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Residents pay approximately 30% of their monthly income toward their rent and utilities.

Providence House Oakland provides equal housing opportunities for all prospective tenants regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, parental/family status, marital status, age, ancestry, sexual orientation, creed, political ideology, gender identity or membership in any other class of persons.
