Kidney Disease & Transplant, Hypertension Clinic
Kidneys are responsible for the removal of excess fluid, filtering waste products, assisting in the regulation of blood pressure, assisting regulation of red blood cell production and maintaining the body’s chemical balance.
There are many reasons why kidneys fail, the most common are:
When kidneys fail, waste products and excess fluid build up in the body and would eventually cause death if not treated through the use of peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis, or kidney transplant.
Treatment Options for Kindey Disease
There are three options for the treatment of kidney disease:
- Peritoneal Dialysis – the removal of waste products through the installation of fluid into the peritoneal cavity. The peritoneal cavity is used as the dialyzing membrane.
- Hemodialysis – blood is circulated through a semipermeable membrane. This membrane is bathed by solutions that selectively remove waste products.
- Kidney Transplantation – The Kidney Transplant Program is part of a multi-organ transplant center at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center & Children’s Hospital that has provided the option of transplantation as treatment for end-stage renal disease since 1981. More than 1,000 patients have received kidney transplants at Sacred Heart. Learn More…
